After being declared dead and kept in the morgue for seven hours — even placed in a tomb — six-year-old Halima suddenly moved her hand, astonishing those around her and revealing an extraordinary story of survival in Gaza.
In war-torn Gaza, where children’s songs struggle to rise above the relentless roar of warplanes, The Miracle of Gaza tells the extraordinary true story of six-year-old Halima. Thrown away from her brother by the force of an Israeli airstrike, Halima was presumed dead and buried after suffering a fatal head injury. Hours later, a faint movement of her finger, noticed by her cousin, revealed a pulse of life — transforming what was thought to be a story of martyrdom into one of rebirth, resilience, and hope.
Through intimate interviews and hauntingly beautiful imagery, the documentary retraces Halima’s journey — from the devastation of that day to her miraculous survival and return to childhood. Told through the eyes of Halima, her family, and those who fought to save her, the film bears witness to the unseen strength of Gaza’s children and their power to find light amidst unimaginable darkness.
The Miracle of Gaza is not only a portrait of one girl’s survival — it is a tribute to the voices of Gaza’s children, whose innocence endures beyond war, and to a little girl who dared to sing louder than the sound of destruction.
Director’s Statement – Hala Bou Saab
The Miracle of Gaza was inspired by a story that moved me profoundly: Halima, a six-year-old girl who was presumed dead after an airstrike, was later found alive. In a place where loss has become routine, her survival felt like a quiet act of defiance — a miracle against despair.
Through this film, I aimed to go beyond headlines and statistics, to reveal the faces, voices, and resilience of Gaza’s children — those whose innocence has been stolen, yet who continue to dream and sing.
As a filmmaker, I believe storytelling bridges distances that politics cannot. This film honors Halima’s journey and reminds the world that even in the midst of war, life insists on being lived — bravely and loudly.
Beyond her individual story, the documentary reflects the silent trauma of Gaza’s children, while showing that hope endures through courage and persistence.
The world stands in solidarity with Gaza’s people, but as filmmakers, it is our duty to document this reality for history so that no one can ever forget this genocide.
The Miracle of Gaza is not a story of pity — it is a story of resilience, faith, and the unyielding will to survive.
